Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

We are very happy to be able to offer clients who live in or near Basel, Switzerland, potentially life-changing mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT).

Mild HBOT has been shown over decades to provide the following key wellness benefits:

HBOT is a known therapy in diving accidents, and now it is also available in a milder form for general health and wellness. Mild HBOT corresponds to the gentle pressure conditions found when three meters underwater. Hence, it is also referred to as “diving”.

The Hyperbaric Chamber … Why?

The human body can last days without food (contrary to what your stomach may be telling you!), but cannot survive even a few minutes without oxygen. Oxygen is important for every cellular function in your body, but sometimes your body has a hard time getting enough oxygen to everywhere it’s needed.

Hypoxia (i.e. lack of oxygen in the tissues in part or all of the body) can be caused by a number of different things, such as hard physical training, a wound, an injury, an infection, the ageing process, cardiovascular disease and more.

In turn, long-term hypoxia can be the trigger for the development of a wide range of chronic diseases. Symptoms can include fatigue, chronic inflammation, muscle/joint pain, brain fog, weak immunity, neurological impairment, among other things.

HBOT works by gently helping to push oxygen into every cell in your body, helping with the healing process and allowing the body to regenerate itself.

How does HBOT work?

Under high pressure oxygen dissolves more easily into body fluidsNormally, oxygen is picked up by red blood cells in the lungs. Those oxygenated red blood cells are then transported throughout the circulatory system, and the oxygen is then released where it is needed.

When everything is working the way it should, then this system is able to keep the body’s tissues supplied with enough oxygen to function.

However, when the system gets disrupted (e.g. if a blood vessel gets partially blocked so the red blood cells can’t get through) or more oxygen is required than normal (e.g. when a tissue is chronically inflamed), there is an upper limit to how much oxygen can be made available.

HBOT works with the laws of physics to increase the oxygen level throughout the body (see figure, right).

By pressurising the air, not only is oxygen more easily picked up by the red blood cells but it is now also able to dissolve directly into the watery component of the blood (the blood plasma).

This is good because the plasma is able to penetrate much more easily and deeper into body tissues than the large red blood cells can.

The end result is that all of the fluids in the body become saturated with life-giving oxygen, including blood plasma, the liquid that surrounds our cells (interstitial fluid) and the fluid in the lymphatic system (see figure, below).

This allows for all the critical and vital cell processes to be performed. Healthier cells = healthier tissues = healthier organs.

Swelling and inflammation are reduced, while circulation and blood flow are increased or restored to restricted areas. Wounds and injuries heal more rapidly. Recovery from surgery is much faster. Detoxification is also promoted. Anaerobic bacteria, most viruses, yeast and fungi cannot survive in an oxygen-enriched environment. It stands to reason, therefore, that increasing oxygen uptake plays a significant role in health and wellness as well as therapeutic applications.


What is mild HBOT used for?

Low pressure, or “mild”, HBOT is used to improve quality of life, sports performance and prevent or improve chronic health conditions. Some of the conditions in which HBOT has been reported to provide benefit include:

  • Neurological conditions

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Chronic joint or muscle pain

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Soft tissue injuries & bone fractures

  • Chronic infections

  • Chronic cardiovascular issues

In addition, there is growing evidence that mild HBOT can be helpful in relieving the symptoms of “Long Covid”.

What is involved in a “dive”?

Photo of Isabel Villagran about to have a hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessionYou sit or lie relaxed in a very spacious “regeneration tent” and breathe compressed ambient air which is constantly being refreshed during the session.

You wear a clear plastic face mask during the dive, through which concentrated oxygen (obtained from the ambient air outside) is delivered.

The HBOT dive is painless. The only sensation is pressure in the ears while the tent is (de)pressurising, identical to that experienced when flying.

Dive time is typically 1 hour. With all of the necessary pre- and post-session activities, allow a total of 90 minutes.

Contact with the outside and early emergence (with or without external assistance) are possible at any time.

The dives are for single adults, or are suitable for a child supervised or accompanied by a parent.

Electronic devices such as mobile phones or tablets can be brought into the tent to help pass the time, or you can bring a book, or just enjoy the peace and quiet away from everyday life.

Light, comfortable clothing is recommended.


How many sessions are required to see the benefits?

Most of the benefits of HBOT start appearing after the first few sessions, if not after the first one.

  • It has been shown in scientific studies that the level of antioxidants produced by the body increases within one day of the first session.
  • Levels of inflammation in the body typically reduce within 4 days of therapy.
  • After around 1-5 sessions, cellular energy and tissue functioning are improved.
  • People have reported experiencing less chronic pain after around 5-10 sessions.
  • New blood vessel formation, a requirement for tissue regeneration, has been observed after around 10-20 sessions.

It is important to note that beyond the demonstrable physiological benefits of mHBOT, symptomatic improvements are largely subjective, and thus will vary from person to person. In any case, the benefits of HBOT are cumulative, so the greater the number of sessions the greater the overall improvements achieved.

Are there any reasons not to do HBOT?

While Mild HBOT can generally be used safely by the general population, there are a few specific situations where it is contraindicated or can only proceed with the approval of the client’s doctor. We will check for and discuss these potential situations when you contact us about booking a session.
